Discuss the pros and cons of a "Single Sign-On" approach for a school district.
I do not have much experience with the Single Sign-On approach. In my experience as a teacher, every district or site I had access to had multiple points of having to log in. For example, logging in to my desktop is a different system and account than logging in to my Chromebook. There are also applications that I use for attendance, grades, and various learning platforms that all require separate log ins. I can see why this makes sense though, because they are produced or hosted by various entities. I can also see why some things would be a security issue and having different accounts may help to control levels of access. My student Chromebooks have more of a Single Sign-On approach, at least for some things like their Google Doc accounts, Haiku, and some apps. They can log in to any Chromebook or Chrome account and have easy access to a few of their other accounts, but certain platforms still require further “sign-ons”. As a teacher I think this makes sense to have student computers be Single Sign On, because having to keep track of multiple accounts can be an added distraction from learning. Students all have the same level of access to data anyways, so a Single Sign On approach makes learning more manageable and efficient. I need to do more research about this approach for teachers and staff, and I wonder if it is more efficient or not.
